The Mercury Theatre was an acclaimed New York company founded by John Houseman and a young man by the name of Orson Welles.

In the summer of 1938, CBS radio offered the company an hour long slot in which to broadcast dramatizations of classic books, in the series "The Mercury Theatre on the Air".

The Mercury Theatre's production of "The Immortal Sherlock Holmes" was based upon the play by William Gillette and features all the things you would expect in a story about Conan Doyle's greatest creation.

This classic tale sees Holmes pitting his wits against his greatest foe, the Napoleon of Crime himself, Professor Moriarty.

On the face of it, what would seem a fairly ordinary case of blackmail hardly worth Holmes's attention is upon closer inspection of far more importance, when it is revealed that the criminal mastermind is behind it all.

It was performed by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre Company, on Sunday September 25th 1938.
