His spirits are lifted upon the arrival of beautiful young Miss Mary Morstan to 221b Baker Street seeking his aid with a bizarre mystery. A few years after her father's disappearance ten years ago she received an exquisite gift a large pearl, and she has continued to receive such a gift annually. She has now received a message from her mysterious benefactor who not only is willing to reveal the motive of the gifted pearls but also claims to know the reasons concerning the disappearance of her father.
